mixing
some thoughts on mixing
I think of mixing as bringing out what a song is meant to be. In most cases that involves enhancing what was recorded and remaining true to the original sound. I love making incredibly creative decisions just as much as I love making focused, subtle, and detailed decisions about sounds. I believe in my taste, and I’m excited to chat about any mixing project!
How should i send in my song/album?
I prefer to begin from the audio tracks, in whatever state they’re in after the tracking and editing project. However, I am also happy to take session files in whatever DAW you’re using for the rough mix. Ultimately, my mix process involves making the best decisions for the project from the start of my involvement. That usually begins with a conversation, so let’s talk about your music!
tracking
get it right from the start
I love great microphones, and I love great instruments. Together, along with preamps, EQs, and compression in some cases, a sound is captured. I like to get that sound right from the start, and that begins with the instrument and the mic. Sometimes that’s all you need (along with the preamp) but sometimes you need to experiment! From straight forward recording to wacky and unique methods, I’m excited to record music.
mastering
is mastering important?
Mastering brings cohesion and impact to a project, and can be as subtle or apparent as necessary. Similar to my approach with mixing, I believe in serving the song. I trust the instincts and decisions made by the artist and the mixer, and see my role as a mastering engineer as complementary to the creative work done already. From bringing your song to a competitive volume to making sure the time between tracks is the perfect length, I serve the music above all else.
how do we get started?
Send me you finished mixes! Once you’re happy with how the mix is sounding, get in touch and we’ll go from there. We’ll talk about song names, album title, and other details needed for metadata and sending things off to distribution, as well as sonic goals/concerns to keep in mind during the process as well as reference songs.
